Properties in Gauteng with racist and offensive names are hindering reconciliation in the province, the DA said on Wednesday.
"Chief surveyor-general Mmuso Riba confirmed to the Democratic Alliance that more than 200 properties exist with disgusting racial connotations, offensive towards certain religions, cultures, traditions or bearing obscene connotations," Democratic Alliance provincial leader John Moodey said.
He said such names were not desirable in a post-apartheid society and a national solution was needed.
One example was a farm called Kafferskraal in the Heidelberg district.
"Changing such names, however, is bound by section 93(3) of the Deeds Registries Act (No 47 of 1937) and can only be done through a request by the property owner to the minister of rural development and land reform," said Moodey.
The DA would call on the minister to look into the matter.
"We can never consider nation-building, redress and reconciliation complete while our people still live and work on insulting places like Kafferskraal."
