Fauresmith in the Free State has been without water all weekend, even though it was hosting an annual horse show, the DA said.

The Democratic Alliance had told the municipality about the Annual Fauresmith Endurance Marathon for horses which was to be attended by 2500 people, Free State DA leader Patricia Kopane said in a statement.

However, nothing was done to ensure the town had water, she said.

Kopane said that with all staff off from midday on Friday, which was pay-day, there was no one to ensure water was pumped and the reservoirs were opened to enable the town to have water for at least a few hours a day.

The party had tried unsuccessfully to contact the mayor, the municipal manager, unit manager and the ward councillor to get someone to start the pumps.

The Kopanong municipal manager refused to comment.
