DA to march to protest ‘prostitute dress’ comment

The Democratic Alliance will march to the Mpumalanga Legislature next Tuesday to hand over a memorandum to speaker Thandi Shongwe against discrimination in the Mpumalanga Legislature. The march will be led by the DA’s provincial chairperson‚ Jane Sithole‚ whose dress and comments made about it earlier this month by African National Congress MPs led to the DA lodging a formal complaint with the SA Human Rights Commission.The DA said Shongwe apparently condoned “a sexist and perverse remark” when ANC MPL Vusimuzi Windvoël compared Sithole’s outfit “to a dress worn by prostitutes”.The legislature had been discussing the vice problems in Witbank when the remark was made.Then‚ said Sithole at the time‚ Shongwe “immediately ruled that my dress was too revealing to be worn in the house and that it was not in line with the decorum of the house…Instead of the speaker protecting my dignity as a woman‚ she entertained their sexual innuendos and attacked me from the presiding officer’s seat”.On Tuesday‚ Sithole will be joined by the interim leader of the DA Womens Network‚ Tarnia Baker‚ Mpumalanga caucus leader Anthony Benadie and the party’s national spokesperson‚ Phumzile Van Damme‚ to lead the protest and handover.“The DA will register its opposition to this discriminatory and unlawful ruling‚ and will hand over a memorandum to the speaker urging better respect for the rights of women‚” the party’s Mpumalanga media manager‚ Portia Adams‚ said...
