Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini is the new leader of the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL).

Dlamini defeated incumbent Angie Motshekga with a 1537 votes to 1081 at the league's long-awaited elective conference held in Pretoria this week.

The conference's results were announced in the early hours of Saturday morning just after 3am.

It is the first time since 2008, when Motshekga was first elected, that the ANCWL will be led by a new president.

The conference, which was already postponed twice this year, was first meant to be convened in 2013 but factionalism within the women’s party caused delays.

International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane was elected treasurer general, defeating  Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa by a huge margin.
