Health MEC orders suspended mortuary manager to leave workplace

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo ordered a mortuary manager who is on suspension to go home after she pitched up at her place of work. Dhlomo was visiting striking workers at the Magwaza Maphalala mortuary in Durban on Wednesday when the suspended manager entered the premises.At a meeting with workers who have been on strike for two days‚ Dhlomo was told that they were unhappy because their manager who was on suspension had resumed her duties on Monday. They also complained about non-payment for overtime and an inadequate supply of protective clothing."As MEC Dhlomo was leaving the mortuary‚ having been assured by the workforce that they would resume their duties‚ the said manager arrived at the facility’s gates. She was met by the MEC who told her that she must remain at home until she produces a letter that says her suspension has been reversed‚" said Dhlomo’s spokesman‚ Desmond Motha.Motha said said the strike had been resolved and community members who wanted to identify or collect the bodies of their deceased could now do so without hindrance.He said Dhlomo suspended the manager after the mortuary‚ under the manager’s guidance‚ refused to assist a family that had earlier taken the wrong corpse for burial."The MEC learnt of the family’s plight after they had gone with the corpse to the SABC studios saying that they do not know what to do with it‚" said Motha...
