UNIVERSAL is to dump its digital rights management protection on its online music in a move that will shake up the global recording industry.

UNIVERSAL is to dump its digital rights management protection on its online music in a move that will shake up the global recording industry.

DRM, as it is popularly known, allows you to purchase music online, but prevents you from copying or sharing it.

Not surprisingly, it has inhibited sales and caused consumers to download music from unprotected sources such as CDs so they can share them with friends.

By acknowledging that the removal of protection is key to the sales of its digital music, Universal is essentially turning a blind eye to post-purchase piracy.
