BAGGIES , wetsuits and surfboards gave way to smart charcoal-coloured suits last weekend when South Africa's top surfer, Jordy Smith, married model and TV presenter Lyndall Jarvis.

The groom's entourage, all of them surfers, swopped their slip-slops for white takkies, which were as close to dress shoes as they would get.

The surf might not have been up for the wedding, but the Grand Beach at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town turned out to be an ideal venue for a surfer's wedding.

The who's who of surfing in South Africa was among the 200 guests.

Among them were former Springbok rugby star Rob Louw, his daughter, Roxy - an accomplished surfer and life-saver - and Top Billing presenter Jeannie D.

The couple met at a horse race in Kenilworth, Cape Town, and has been an item for three years.

Jordy, who will turn 26 on Tuesday, proposed to Lyndall, 25, last year when they were in California. He popped the question while they were on their boards among the waves.

They have had to put their honeymoon on hold because the World Championship Tour of Surfing begins on March 1 at Snapper Rocks, on the Gold Coast of Australia.

"We both have so much on the go," said Jordy. "When the time is right and we have a little bit of space, we'll go on our honeymoon. We're thinking of going to Bora Bora [an island in the Pacific]."

This year, Jordy is pursuing a world title - a goal he mentioned in his wedding speech.
