This week Peugeot launched its first urban crossover vehicle, adding another model to its lineup of quality vehicles with French flair.

The trend-setting 2008 sets new standards in this segment of the market.

What is it?

The 2008 is based on the same platform as the 2008 hatchback and is powered by a 1.6-litre engine with a drive-through five-speed manual gearbox via the front wheels.

This is the only model available at the moment, although an automatic may be available at a later stage.

More engine derivatives may also be on the cards.

The car's main competitors are the Nissan Juke and the Ford EcoSport, a competitive pair of top sellers.

How does it look?

The car, offered in Allure specification only, has typical French styling with a fresh, youthful look that fits neatly into this segment. It will find favour with families looking for a modern, upbeat vehicle.

Short overhangs and streamlined shape, smooth surfaces and generous glass areas combine to create an attractive, athletic looking vehicle.

Given its compact shape, the 2008's roomy interior will come as a surprise.

Rear accommodation is spacious and the tailgate provides access to a generous 360l boot.

The way the split rear bench seat folds away completely, leaving a flat cargo area that easily accommodates large, unwieldy objects, is impressive.

This area can accommodate anything from mountain bikes to hiking gear, or even golf clubs, making the 2008 a perfect match for owners who enjoy active lifestyles.

What's it like to drive?

Pretty good in most conditions, but we felt it needed a sixth gear. The car, which was launched in the Eastern Cape, was a bit flat on long, windy hills around Port Alfred.

We liked the road height which, to some degree, flattened out potholes and bumpy roads.

Performance on the flat was nippy. The 1.6-litre petrol engine pushes out 88kW at 6000rpm and 260Nm of torque at 4250rpm. Top speed is 196km/h.

Any special features?

We liked the full-colour touch screen display which includes satellite navigation, Bluetooth telephony, audio-streaming USB and auxiliary audio inputs, trip computer and the FM/AM receiver.

We also liked the Grip Control system, which is standard and optimises the crossover's traction control settings for a variety of conditions.

Should you buy one?

Yes. The 2008 is priced right at R269900 but faces tough competition from the Juke and EcoSport.

Included is a five-year 60000 maintenance contract and three-year/100000km warranty.
