Almost 300 years of tradition came to an end following a historic vote in Scotland on Thursday. This one, however, was a landslide victory and did not lead to a major constitutional meltdown.

Instead, women have been granted the right to become members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St Andrews.

In the second-most important vote of the day in Scotland, the club bowed to pressure, with almost 85% of votes supporting the proposal.

"I am very pleased indeed to announce that the membership of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews has voted overwhelmingly in favour of welcoming women members," said the club's secretary, Peter Dawson.

The policy will take effect immediately, and the club said some women would be put on a fast track for membership.

Although women have been allowed to play on the course, they were, until this week's vote, not allowed in the clubhouse and had no significant part in the sport's rule-making arm, the R&A.
