Luthando “BU” Mthembu's stint on Big Brother Mzansi might not have won him the big cash prize, but he drew attention which has allowed him to pursue a career in acting and music.

The reality TV star's breakthrough role as Vuyani in Adulting season 1 has had viewers talking about the steamy scenes he plays in the risqué series. As he returns for the second season, he reflects on his journey to stardom.

“Without Big Brother, there is no Adulting. And without Adulting there is no next move. It's changed my life in adjusting to popularity. I call it popularity because I don't think fame in South Africa exists. I've always been multitalented, so now the spotlight is on me I can use my other skills ,” he said.

BU is also gearing to release a single titled Adulting 2 inspired by the popular series.

“I won GQ’s Best Dressed On Screen Personality this year and I’ve presented a few awards. My music is also going well; this show has put my music on the platform. So that's been awesome.”

He's now working with well-known stars, including Thembi Seete.

“A lot of the scenes we did together were her first time, so I felt honoured to have had the opportunity to help her with those experiences on screen. It was an honour to work with her.”

In this season, BU said he's more confident in how he plays the character of Vuyani.

“My approach to embodying him involved being unapologetic. This time, whatever you saw in season 1 is amplified. He exudes more confidence and embraces whichever path he chooses. And it’s intriguing how the more we change, the more we stay the same.

"[The sex scenes are] going to be worse. I have more sex scenes than the other gents. I'm going to leave it at that.”
