'Queen Modjadji': more of stellar cast revealed — including the leading lady
Mzansi Magic will bring the gripping story of SA's legendary Rain Queen to life in this eagerly anticipated new drama series

Ever since production started on Queen Modjadji — the epic new drama series inspired by the life of SA's legendary Rain Queen — speculation has been rife about which talented celeb would nab the title role.
Though you'll have to wait until 8pm on July 14 for the show to premiere on DStv's Mzansi Magic (channel 161), the wait to discover the name of the leading lady is over.
It's been officially announced that Makoma Mohale is starring as Maselekwani, the young queen-in-waiting whose reign as the hereditary Queen Modjadji will bring about a golden age of peace and prosperity for the Balobedu people of Limpopo.
Though this is Mohale's first major role in a drama series, she's no stranger to the small screen, having starred in popular shows such as The River. The 27-year-old actress, who is a BA performing arts graduate, has also graced the stage in productions such as Too Sweet Too Bad, Fright Alah and The Infidel.
Mohale joins an exceptional cast featuring not one, but two former Miss SAs — Shudufhadzo Musida and Ndavi Nokeri — among its mix of fresh and familiar faces.
The newest cast members to be revealed include:
- Putla Sehlapelo (The Wild) as Ramulodi, the king’s secret keeper;
- Mudi Mudau as Khadikhulu, Maselekwani’s rakhadi (aunt), head teacher and adviser;
- Priscilla Raboroko as young Raisibe, the daughter of young Maselekwani’s minders, who is the queen-to-be's childhood companion and trusted friend;
- Aubrey Mmakola (Snitch, Jacob's Cross and Binnelanders) as king of the neighbouring Bapedi kingdom;
- Moses Raseleke as Mphabantshi, the royal healer, prophecy teller and spiritual leader;
- Sipho Ndlovu (The Queen and Isibaya) as Gen Phaahla, the cunning general of the Bapedi kingdom; and
- Candy Tsamandebele as Muyahabo, one of Supreme King/Mambo Mugodo’s wives and stepmother to Maselekwani. As an award-winning musician, who is renowned for embracing her Balobedu culture, dressing in traditional attire and singing in Khelovedu, Tsamandebele is a fitting addition to the cast. After all, Msanzi Magic confirmed stars were chosen not just for their acting prowess, but for their ability to master the Khelovedu language.
