Five people appeared in the Knysna Magistrate's Court yesterday in connection with the seizure of cocaine worth R380-million, Western Cape police said.

"The five accused appeared in court today. They were not asked to plead," Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

They were remanded in custody and will appear in the same court on December 23, Pojie said.

The accused are Cheng Cuo, 57, Cjuwei You, 30, Zli Liu, 51, Mogamat Adams, 41, and Beverly Jones, 47.

They were arrested on Friday in a "well-planned sting operation by crime intelligence and Knysna police after they received information regarding illegal activities taking place near the Knysna Waterfront," said Pojie.

Police went to premises where the five people lived, and they accompanied the SAPS to a boat where 48 bags of bricked cocaine were discovered.

"The boat was anchored adjacent to a flat, which the suspects were occupying," Pojie said.

The boat, worth about R1.5- million, was confiscated.
