Party city leaves cops on the wrong job

The City of Cape Town needs to pump more funds into security and crowd control or it must cut some of its events and film shoots. This emerged at a safety and security portfolio committee yesterday during the presentation of a report that said the increasing number of events in the city meant officers were not concentrating on their core business."This could result in insufficient emergency resources from policing, law enforcement, fire services and disaster management being available in the event of an emergency or a disaster occurring," it said.It proposed that the number of events be capped.Member of the mayoral committee for safety and security JP Smith said the number of events hosted by the city had increased by 10% in the past year.Smith said the strain was mainly seen between November and April - the city's extended festive season - where there were sometimes as many as 18 events a day.The city deploys at least five officers for small events and up to 100 for major events.Cape Town Film Commission CEO Denis Lillie said the film industry had contributed R1.5-billion to the city's economy since last year...
