Fraud suspect's ups and downs

A Limpopo health department official, promoted earlier this year to a senior management position despite allegations of tender irregularities against him, has been suspended. Despite the allegations and now his suspension, the provincial government says it did nothing wrong in promoting the official.The official, whose name is known to The Times, was suspended after a service provider alleged that he tried to solicit a bribe.The service provider was awarded a R2-million contract to provide laptop computers to students from the province studying medicine in Cuba.The official, who was promoted in February, is alleged to have demanded a "cut" from the service provider.A source with knowledge of the suspension said: "The service provider wrote a letter of complaint to the department and he [the official] was suspended for corruption."Billy Teffo, spokesman for the department, refused to divulge details: "The official has been placed on precautionary suspension. The relationship between the employer and employee is governed by the Labour Relations Act ... the details cannot be disclosed."Teffo said allegations of misconduct were not a judgment and did not preclude the official from being promoted."The official was subjected to proper recruitment processes and found to be suitable," said Teffo...
