Women nurture the seeds of farming knowledge

Scores of women travelled to East London yesterday to receive tips on how to grow big by starting to farm small during a two-day training programme organised by the SA Network on Inequality. The women, who have turned most of their yard space into gardens, were trained and encouraged to focus on agro-ecological farming.Project coordinator Sibulele Poswayo said learning to farm was critical because 13million South Africans went to bed hungry every night.A recent research study conducted by international non-governmental organisation Oxfam showed that one in four families in the country struggled with hunger and poverty, raising concerns about food insecurity in societies.Simon Vilakazi of the NGO Economic Justice Network said the aim of the training programme was to empower women farmers because they fed families and the nation."We want to empower women to produce food. That way we can beat the crisis of hunger," he said.The farmers said climate change was their biggest challenge...
