A minor accident that saw a truck overturn attracted scores of looters on the R56 highway, in Umkomaas, south of Durban on Tuesday.

A video of the incident emerged on social media. In the video, looters are seen removing what appears to be plastic basin containers from the truck.

Speaking to News24, Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu confirmed the incident, saying the vehicle was travelling from Pietermaritzburg to Ixopo.

"The driver has said the brakes failed causing the vehicle to overturn. The truck is believed to belong to a Pakistani national from Pietermaritzburg. The vehicle contained items such as mats and brooms."

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said after police visited the nearby Richmond community, some of the residents returned the items.

No case has been opened.
