I WATCHED the movie Tsotsi many times after it won a couple of Oscars - always hoping that I would fully enjoy it. Unfortunately, Presley Chweneyagae, above, was not convincing enough for me to label the movie an African classic. Not just his fresh-faced looks, but the manner in which he carries himself did not inspire respect or fear - a feeling that a true tsotsi would engender in any person. When Chweneyagae was arrested this week for driving with a fake driver's licence from Ivory Coast, a friend remarked: "Now we know what happens when a village fake wins an Oscar for playing the part of a tsotsi - he thinks he's the real deal. Which tsotsi can't get a clean driver's licence?" Give back that Oscar!
