CLAIRE Keeton's detailed article "Staff shortage crisis looms at rural hospitals" (January 14) - with large colour photos, figures, causes and possibilities behind the shortage - was one of many humbling efforts by the Sunday Times to display its commitment to the betterment of the lives of all the people who live in this country.

I hope other papers take note and become as committed to searching for and exposing matters affecting the powerless poor and rural-based citizens as they are to writing about and displaying pictures of power-hungry politicians and the lusts of rich readers.

Your report and many others like it in previous issues of the Sunday Times, and the encouragement you give the government and other relevant institutions, make this the moral paper of the South African media and thus, in your own words, the paper for the people. - Christopher Nono, Tembisa
