The social networking site MXit has offered to supply police with information about users who created sex lists that named and shamed hundreds of Chatsworth and Phoenix school pupils.

MXit chief executive and founder Herman Heunis said the network had been made aware of the sex-list culprits in KwaZulu-Natal.

He said the network took a strong stand against abusers.

This follows an angry reaction to the sex lists, which named pupils from grades eight to 12, resulting in pupils confronting the alleged perpetrators.

One of the lists was modelled on the popular adult TV series Gossip Girl.

There were also "knob", "gay" and several "slut" lists.

Police are now investigating the lists. Four cases of intimidation and assault have been opened.

Heunis said MXit was working with the schools to identify the defamatory lists and have them deleted.

"We're also in the process of identifying the authors of the lists, who will be permanently banned from MXit.

"We are happy to supply this information to the police after the receipt of a subpoena.

"Our users' right to privacy is, and will always be, of paramount importance to us, but we cannot condone the unacceptable behaviour of a small group of users," he said.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said that police would contact MXit to help them with information about the authors of the lists.
