VS gaming festival proves eSports is alive & kicking in SA

13 May 2018 - 00:00 By Sylvia McKeown

Who knew that one day one of the biggest and most profitable sports in the world wouldn't require you to get out of your chair?
eSports is a massive business in which amateur and professional gamers battle it out to prove who has the fastest fingers and highest scores. It's worth over $1.5-million globally, with estimates that that might double by the end of the year. The sport has got so big the US state of Texas is building a $10-million eSports-dedicated stadium.
Not to be left behind, South Africa has a burgeoning eSports community with more teams formed daily. Over the past weekend players signed up to the games on their preferred console gaming machines to battle with every teenage boy's favourite title, EA's Fifa.
The event took place at Joburg's Montecasino, where a legion of gaming geeks filled the events area at the VS gaming festival. The winners would get a slice of the R1.5-million prize money and a chance to represent South Africa at the e-World Cup.
