Our travel expert answers your questions

We are going to Dubai and we and would like stay at one of the big five-star hotels, but were shocked to find rates that are way beyond our budget —  rates from R6000 to R15000 a  night at the best-known ones. Can you recommend a good hotel for around R2000 a night? — Vanessa Redding

The more famous hotels, like the Burj Al Arab, the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Madinah Jumeirah, can be exceptionally pricey. But there are other four- and five-star hotels that offer fair value. I found great deals on the www.booking.com website. However, you need to add 20% to all the quoted rates (10% tax and 10% service charge). Among the most luxurious hotels in your price range are Raffles Dubai (R2079 a night), the Shangri-La Hotel Dubai (R1876.66) and the Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel & Towers (R1452.17). Hotels linked to the big shopping centres are very popular. You can try the Pullman Mall of the Emirates Hotel, which is highly rated (R1753.78).

To compare prices try www.hotels.com, which shows prices with tax and service charges included.
