LOCATION
This leisure and business retreat in George, Western Cape, sits at the feet of the Outeniqua Mountains, along the pristine Garden Route, renowned for its diverse vegetation and scenic coastline. The resort is 7km from George Airport.
STYLE
Fancourt is in an expansive, lush golf estate and offers two five-star accommodation options - The Manor House and The Fancourt Hotel. The Manor House has 18 suites and dates back to around 1880, when founder Henry Fancourt White called it home.
The hotel has 115 rooms, most of them facing the majestic views of the rolling fairways and the Outeniqua Mountains.SERVICE
The lavish Manor House has personalised butlers who are on call 24/7. The service is excellent.
THE EATING
The two multi-award-winning restaurants, Henry White's and La Cantina, offer contemporary gourmet dishes that will have you asking for seconds.
Choose from an extensive range of wines from the hotel cellar to wash down the delicacies.
THE 'DO' LIST
There's more to Fancourt and George than just playing golf. You can take a drive along the Garden Route to Knysna, where you can catch a houseboat on the lagoon and have lunch as you sail to the Knysna Heads. There's diverse marine life, including dolphins and whales, to see. Nearby Botlierskop Private Game Reserve is home to lions, rhinos, buffalos, giraffes, zebras and more than 200 bird species. There's also lots of fun for children at the Kidz Club while their parents go about the business of unwinding.
BEST TIME TO GO
George and the Garden Route have a Mediterranean climate with moderately hot summers and mildly nippy winters.
There's usually lots of rain in the area but the Western Cape is in the throes of a drought and water restrictions are still enforced by the hotel.
RATES
The Manor House in high season (November to March) is R10,000 for two people per night (R7,410 off peak). The Fancourt Hotel is R2,380 in peak and R1,765 off peak.
