Hotel Review: Protea Hotel Riempie Estate, Oudtshoorn

Elizabeth Sleith finds this budget-friendly family hotel to be a decent stop on a Western Cape road trip

29 October 2017 - 00:00 By Elizabeth Sleith

LOCATION
In Oudtshoorn, the long-lashed "ostrich capital of the world", betwixt the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains in the Klein Karoo.
STYLE
Accommodation is in thatched rondavels and chalets spread out over rolling lawns, giving the property a sort of farm-village feel with those lovely mountains in the background. All that thatch, combined with natural décor elements - such as woven baskets on the walls and reed panels in the furniture - achieve an Afrocentric vibe.
It's a modest three-star option so low on bells and whistles but adequate for a clean, peaceful night's sleep on the road - provided there are no snorers in the family.
Renovations have been on for some time - the rondavels are done and the family chalets are expected to be ready by early December. Hopefully they'll have fixed the trampoline on the playground by then, too.
SERVICE
Smiling and brief, with easy check-ins and -outs - just how road-weary travellers like it.
THE EATING
The restaurant - all dark wood and African fabrics - serves buffet meals. In the mood for more of a special-occasion dinner, though, our family tried Jemima's, which had a constellation of stellar reviews online and is conveniently on the same street as the hotel.
In an old Cape Dutch house, with wooden floors, charming waiters and fall-off-the-bone lamb (hey, it's the Karoo!), it's a clear hit with tourists - so much German overheard in one room - and deservedly so.
ACTIVITIES
The number-one must-do around here is a 20-minute drive from the hotel: the Cango Caves, where the magic made by falling water over thousands of years in this eerie kingdom down below is truly a wonder to behold.
Of course, back in Oudtshoorn, you'll find ostrich encounters and more wildlife experiences at the Cango Wildlife Ranch.
Back at the hotel, on steamy afternoons, chill out by the pool with a cocktail.
BEST TIME TO GORoad-trippers take note: Oudsthoorn falls along Route 62 - the longest wine route in the world and surely among SA's loveliest drives, so a stop here is recommended as part of a longer, winding adventure.RATES
R1,150 for a chalet or rondavel for two people sharing (kids under 12 stay free). Singles pay R899, accommodation only. Breakfast is an extra R175.
