Race of the president, at this or any other time, should not matter

Peter Bruce rightly praises John Steenhuisen — but for the wrong reason

In his opinion piece (“Steenhuisen makes it safely to first base”, Sunday Times August 20), Peter Bruce states flatly that “the DA has done well to walk away from it [the position of president]  because the leader, whoever it may be, at this time in our history, simply has to be black”. He misses the point: concessions in negotiations are one thing; socioeconomic statements about when a head of state need not reflect the dominant ethnic, cultural or racial demographics of a nation, another...
