Last day of the PSL season brings pain and ecstasy

13 May 2018 - 00:00 By BARENG-BATHO KORTJAAS and SAZI HADEBE

Mamelodi Sundowns celebrated their crowning as the Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions while Ajax Cape Town will hope to contest the play-offs in a bid to preserve their status in top-flight football.
The Brazilians earned their eighth Absa Premiership title and a third under coach Pitso Mosimane in the PSL era. Mosimane's team was held 0-0 by Bloemfontein Celtic in Free State on Saturday.
Sundowns added a point to their tally to finish with 60 points and five points clear of second finisher Orlando Pirates, who beat Free State Stars 2-1 on Saturday.
The final day of the 2017-18 PSL season saw Ajax beaten 2-1 by Kaizer Chiefs at the Cape Town Stadium to wrap up the campaign on 31 points to finish in 15th spot.
Ajax will now hope the boardroom decision will favour them over the eligibility of their Zimbabwean striker Tendai Ndoro. If that doesn't happen, relegated Platinum Stars, who beat Bidvest Wits 1-0 on Saturday to finish with 24 points, might make a comeback and be the team to play in the play-offs.
Percy Tau and Rodney Ramagalela finished as the joint top goalscorers of the season with 11 goals apiece, as they both failed to add to their tallies on Saturday.PLAY-OFFS
Ajax will contest the promotion play-offs in a round robin format against Black Leopards and Jomo Cosmos, who finished second and third respectively in the National First Division (NFD) behind Highlands Park.
The Lions of the North gained automatic promotion to the fast lane of football in the country by virtue of finishing top of the NFD log.
Owen da Gama's side romped to promotion having tasted defeat only three times.
PLAY-OFFS FIXTURES
The play-offs, which will feature six games in total, will commence on Wednesday when Leopards host Ajax in Thohoyandou.
The second match on May 20 will see Jomo Cosmos hosting Leopards; Ajax hosting Cosmos on May 23; Ajax at home to Leopards on May 26; Leopards at home to Cosmos on May 30 and Cosmos hosting Ajax in the final match on June 2.TOP EIGHT
Seven sides secured their spots in the top-eight bracket and will join Sundowns in the MTN8 competition next season. They are Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Maritzburg United, Free State Stars, Cape Town City, AmaZulu and Golden Arrows.
Maritzburg and Free State Stars bring the curtain down on the PSL season in the last match of the season in the Nedbank Cup at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.
THE REST OF THE RESULTS
One of the biggest results of Saturday has to be AmaZulu's 1-0 win over Cape Town City, confirming their top-eight finish on the last day of the season. Mbongeni Zulu scored the 63rd minute winner for Cavin Johnson's team at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi.
There was also joy for Usuthu neighbours Golden Arrows who managed to hang onto a top-eight position, finishing 7th with a 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium. Fortune Makaringe scored the 81st-minute equaliser for The Team of Choice to cancel out Lerato Lamola's 21st-minute opener.
There was joy at last for Chiefs as Bernard Parker and Joseph Malongoane's winner over Ajax ensured Amakhosi finish 3rd on the log, with a ticket to contest next year's CAF Confederation Cup with the winner of the Nedbank Cup, which will be either Maritzburg or Free State Stars.Parker's opener was his fifth goal this season, making him the top league scorer at Chiefs in a season in which they scored a paltry 27 goals.
The most improved team in the league was Pirates, who needed goals by Ntsikelelo Nyauza and Thamsanqa Gabuza to beat Free State Stars 2-1 at Orlando Stadium to finish second under Serbian coach Milutin Sredojevic. Both Nyauza and Gabuza finished the season with four league goals.
Pirates fell into junk status last season after having their worst season in 22 years, with their 11th-place finish.
Bucs will contest next year's CAF Champions League alongside champions Sundowns. The competition will start in December as CAF want to realign their calendar with the one starting in May to August...
