Actress Jessica Nkosi has her sights set on theatre after leaving popular TV show Isibaya.

She told TshisaLIVE that the opportunity came at the right time in her career and her nostalgia for theatre confirmed her direction.

"It's just something I felt I wanted to do at this point in my career. The opportunity availed itself, and I guess it found me at a point where I was like 'yes yes yes!' Having studied drama, the last time I was on stage was in my final year and I missed it," she said.

The decision to venture into theatre was a "bold" one for the actress whose fans were "freaking out" over not having her on their small screens daily. Her character, Isibaya's queen Qondi, had a loyal following.

However, the actress told TshisaLIVE that she felt it was time for her to showcase her other talents and she has been having a great time in rehearsals.

"I'm having such a great time in rehearsals, theatre pushes you to the limit as it is to a live audience. I think people have seen that I can dance, but with singing, people would have to come and watch the production to see whether I'm actually singing or not. I’m quite excited for the reactions," she said.

The actress, who was also announced as part of the BET A-List host team, will be starring in a musical titled Maria (Telling the story of the Son) .

She said the character fascinated her and that the pressure to tell the story in a "current and relatable way" was important to her.

"I guess it's the unknown that fascinated me about her. We know Maria, but in a way we don't know her. I don't know if that makes sense. This is a story that is bigger than all of us and the pressure is on. However, everyone knows that I love musicals, so to be able to tell this important story in a musical and theatre is a dream come true!"

The play will be launching on June 24 at Carnival City.
