Maskandi Fever | Cassper and Vusi Nova are chasing the maskandi sauce!

Rapper Cassper Nyovest is the latest artist to announce he will be putting some Maskandi sauce in his music, announcing a collaboration with Shwi Nomtekhala this week.

And he's far from the only one looking to the genre for inspiration.

There's definitely something in the water that's making "mainstream" artist in popular genres like hip-hop or afro-pop want to tie in some maskandi style singing or guitar.

The authentic Mzansi sound is known around the world, but many of the younger breed of artists haven't actually given it the time of day until recently.

It looks like just as "new age kwaito" was created, Mzansi will soon have a playlist written "new age maskandi".

The likes of Cassper, Zahara, Vusi Nova and Nelisiwe Sibiya seem determined to make it a thing and we ain't complaining!

The Tito Mboweni hitmaker will be releasing his maskandi collaboration on Thursday.

Vusi Nova

Shared this video of him and Igcokama Elisha (Mthandeni) just jamming after a meeting about a maskandi remix for As'phelelanga, but the song they are singing in the video has since caught fire too.

Nelisiwe Sibiya 

The Lockdown actress has made it know that she plans to move into maskandi music, which is close to her heart and part of her culture.

"I'm really excited for everything that is happening and I thank God. I am doing afro-kandi, which is a very unlikely fusion between afro-pop and maskandi. It's the less travelled road and I am enjoying bringing it to life and paving a path and platform for it," She told TshisaLIVE last month.

DJ Melon

DJ Melon also fused scathamiya into his latest album and in his hit single Thembalami.

"Thembalami is a fusion of isicathamiya (traditional Zulu) music and house. I am highly influenced by things that are really authentic to home. For example, the inspiration came from a song I did with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who were my father's favourite musicians in my previous album. It made me realise that it is possible to bring these two unique elements together to make amazing music," he also told TshisaLIVE last month.
