Top five dance crazes that took 2022 by storm

Gone are the days when we would usher in the festive with one dance move like Twalaza, chang'a magear, mnike or whatever the 1980s and 1990s kids danced to back then.

Since the rise of amapiano, every year we have new dance challenges and a weekly trend on Tik-Tok.  Some people can't keep up while others with two left feet choose a challenge they resonate with. 

Here are a few popular amapiano dance challenges that kept Mzansi on their toes in 2022.

Tobetsa challenge 

This has to be one of the easiest dance moves to come out this year, even if you are not musically inclined and have no rhythm whatsoever. All you have to do is point. 

The song by Myztro, ShaaunMusiq & Ftears featuring Focalistic and Daliwonga has people counting down to the new year. 

uMlando challenge

The track by 9umba, Mdoovar, and Toss features Sino Msolo, Lady Du, Young Stunna, Sir Trill and had women agreeing we would sit this one out. 

In April the song had 270-million views on TikTok, 112,000 videos created, and more than 7.5-million streams on digital streaming platforms.

Talking about the instant fame the song brought to him, Toss said he was enjoying every moment. 

“It feels amazing and scary at the same time, but I’m enjoying the moment. I’m trying not to be succumbed by the pressure, I’m trying to keep it as solid as I can. Sometimes it can get overwhelming because people expect you to be happy all the time, but I’m handling it quite well,” Toss told TshisaLIVE.

Trigger challenge

The hit song Trigger, where DJ Karri featured Prime De 1st, BL Zero and Lebzito, trended on TikTok when celebs did the #Triggerdancehallenge.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE in April, DJ Karri said when the song started making waves in Mzansi, it opened many doors he never thought he would enter.

“I didn't think things would happen so fast. I even went international with just one song.  I was very happy, even for my boys I worked with on the song."

Hamba Wena challenge

A hit with young and old, this challenge has been a Tik-Tok favourite for the longest time, thanks to trendy choreography that gained momentum on the platform. Hamba Wena is Deep London and Boohle's song.

Ba Straata challenge

Dj Maphorisa joined forces with 2woshort and Stompiiey 007 to deliver a song titled Ba Straata.

The music producer and DJ is known for actively enjoying dance challenges, and this one caught momentum very quickly.
