K-Zaka is on a mission to become an internationally renowned DJ and producer. The strides he's made in his career have been a build-up towards that achievement.

The rising star hailing from Northam, Limpopo, has worked with household names including Kwesta, TLT and Makwa, been a resident DJ for TV shows such as ShizNiz and Craze World Live, and performed at Kwesta’s The 16th Bar and Rocking With The Daisies.

“My style has changed based on my experiences and the different levels I get to in life. The people I meet inspire me, to go back home and learn something that would trigger an idea that would be life-changing. It’s like a domino effect, being willing to learn, grow and expand yourself, just like the K in my stage name, 'Kaizen', a Japanese word for constant self-expansion and never-ending improvement,” he told TshisaLIVE.

K-Zaka, real name Onkabetse Hlongwane, did a Q&A session with TshisaLIVE on the strides he's been making in the music industry and his future plans.

Who are your biggest music influences?

I find inspiration everywhere and anywhere from just looking out my window on the 11th floor of my apartment early in the morning and it’s visible that people are up in the city and already grinding. That on it’s own sparks so much in me

When is your favourite time of day to create?

My favourite time to create has to be early in the morning or just the first half of the day. I’m at my best energy every morning after a good night's rest.

What motivates you to create?

By reading and watching a lot of YouTube tutorials, I learnt almost everything on YouTube. Just being very eager to learn and always being the student.

Fashion currently inspires me a lot, there’s a feeling you get from being all dressed up. It affects how you perform on stage, how you walk and how you think about yourself. I’ve been enjoying styling myself lately and discovering a lot about myself.

How has music affected other areas of your life?

I’m able to let go of a lot of things in my head or emotions I’m feeling by either producing a beat or laying down my vocals. I most likely feel way better after being honest behind the recording equipment.

Music has healed me, inspired me, and motivated me to be a better human and a better version of myself. I don’t how but it just has a lot of effects from just consuming it. Sharing my way of how I look or hear things. It’s very therapeutic.

How do you define success as an artist?

I define success as balance. Being able to find a centre point for everything that’s important to you, from spending time with family or loved ones, to creating a consistent routine for your health/ fitness, and mental health while having your heart's desires.
