A man was seriously injured when he was struck by lightning while running to catch a bus in Pretoria, Gauteng paramedics said on Saturday.

"Witnesses to the event [on Friday night] informed paramedics that they saw a bright flash of light and then the running man fell to the ground," Netcare 911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks said.

Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the man lying on the roadside in the rain.

"He had sustained electrical contact burn wounds to his face and arm and was in a serious condition."

He was treated and stabilised on scene and taken to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
