Metrorail has started repairs to two electrical substations damaged by lightning which caused delays for trains running on the Johannesburg to Pretoria line.
"The first phase of our contingency plan will focus on repairing the outside stations, being Tembisa, Leralla and Olifantsfontein," spokesman Lawrence Venkile said.
Repairs at these stations were expected to be completed by next Monday.
The second phase would involve replacing the whole system at the Kaalfontein substation, which controlled the Tembisa, Leralla and Olifantsfontein stations.
Venkile said the signalling panel and relay rooms of the electrical substations were severely damaged by the lightning on Sunday. A team had been assigned to manually authorise the movement of trains.
The repairs and contingency plans would minimise the delays and ensure trains operated safely.
Metrorail apologised for the delays which affected a total of 199 trains a day, Venkile said.
