If one new album from your favourite band is a treat, how about two?

In discographies, the double album usually appears at the very peak of a musician's commercial success, a moment in their career where those around them have lost the power to say no. What do most double albums lack? An editor.

With a little judgment, baggy doubles like U2's Rattle and Hum, Bruce Springsteen's The River and Arcade Fire's Reflektor could easily have been pared down to lean masterpieces.

But double albums made less sense in the CD age, when running time on a disc was 74 minutes.

They make no sense in the age of the digital download, which is why most of the genuine classics belong to a bygone era.

Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti is set for re-release on Tuesday in a remastered deluxe format with alternative takes and mixes that fill up three CDs.

I don't know whether to be excited or terrified. Can you have too much of a good thing? Here's my rundown of 10 of the greatest double albums ever made.

1. The Beatles: The Beatles (1968);

2. Bob Dylan: Blonde on Blonde (1966);

3. Miles Davis: Bitches Brew (1970);

4. Stevie Wonder: Songs In The Key of Life (1976);

5. The Rolling Stones: Exile on Main Street (1972);
