“We support the call that a team of ballistic experts needs to be assigned to ensure the gathering of evidence and to carry [out] spot examinations of firearms, including licensed firearms, in crime scenes.
“We are also suggesting that a sophisticated technology must be used to conduct touch DNA and fingerprinting on firearms and dangerous weapons and other exhibits found at crime scenes.”
eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said the municipality had sought intervention from police minister Bheki Cele when the number of public representatives killed in Durban increased last year.
“It is unfortunate that while this intervention was beginning to yield positive results, we have witnessed this latest incident,” he said.
Kaunda called on law enforcement agencies to find Molife’s killer.
“On behalf of the people of eThekwini, particularly residents of ward 99, we would like to convey our deepest condolences to the Molife family. We trust they will find strength in knowing that his untimely death is not only a loss for the family but the entire municipality.
“We have been robbed of the skills and knowledge of this young leader who was dedicated in serving his community.”

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday confirmed eThekwini ward 99 councillor Mnqobi Victor Molife was murdered.
“It is with a deep sense of anger and sadness that we are bidding farewell to another young leader whose life has been cut short under very mysterious circumstances. All freedom-loving people and progressive forces must join hands in condemning the barbaric murder of Mnqobi 'Gaah' Molife,” said provincial spokesperson Mafika Mndebele.
“The brutality and violent manner in which Molife’s life has been taken can’t be easily erased from our minds. It is even worse for the members of the family, especially the children and the wife.”
The party assured the family it would keep abreast of the police investigations and ensure Molife's killers are found.
“We understand many other families in various corners of the province are in mourning after the violent manner in which the lives of their loved ones were taken. This cannot go on forever,” said Mndebele.
