Paris-based Alberts answers beleaguered Springboks' SOS call from Australasia

11 September 2016 - 16:23 By Craig Ray

Bruising flank Willem Alberts has been called from Paris to join the beleaguered Springboks in Christchurch after lock Lood de Jager was ruled out. De Jager suffered a ‘bruised knee’ during Saturday’s 23-17 defeat against Australia in Brisbane and will be out for at least two weeks.Alberts’ call up from French club Stade Francais is a telling one‚ and tacit acknowledgment by coach Allister Coetzee that he needs to find more ways to get his side over the advantage line. With the rampant All Blacks looming‚ the Springboks could be in for a torrid evening against the world champions if their current poor form persists. They have won just three of six Tests this season – all three wins at home – and don’t appear to be making strides as the season wears on.The Boks have lacked many things in 2016‚ and one of them has been a man to take the ball up and create some gainline momentum.Teboho Mohoje has had his moments‚ but without much support from the more mobile and less physically dominant No 8 Warren Whiteley‚ it’s been a losing cause. Alberts can offer the Boks a way over the advantage line but it would require a back row reshuffle.De Jager is a No 5 lock and Alberts cannot fulfil that role. He could play No 4 lock but with Eben Etzebeth and Franco Mostert in the squad‚ that particular skill won’t be required. So it’s a given that Alberts will fit into the back row. Blindside flank is his preferred position‚ so Mohoje could be the man to miss out. But Coetzee might also surprise by starting with Alberts at No 8 against the All Blacks. The third‚ and most likely option‚ is that Alberts will provide bench cover as Pieter-Steph du Toit is promoted to start alongside Eben Etzebeth in the second row.But throwing Alberts into a starting role might be more useful. Getting 60 minutes out of the ‘Bone Collector’ is preferable to a 20-minute cameo. At this stage the Boks have little to lose and also need some more mature heads on the field.Faf de Klerk and Johan Goosen‚ who both underwent scans on Saturday evening after the Australia match‚ will remain with the squad and both players will be given enough time to recover from their niggles. However‚ the squad has sufficient cover in both positions.Scrumhalf De Klerk received a blow to the chest while fullback Goosen landed awkwardly on his ankle after he contested a high ball. The Springboks travelled to New Zealand from Brisbane on Sunday. - TMG Digital..
