This week the bidding for the Mampara position was furious. A poet called for a media tribunal, it took eight policemen to arrest one reporter and Hogarth put money on a horse called Goat to win the Durban July.

But none of these frantic bids could top that of the Godfather of all Mamparas, the former police commissioner Jackie Selebi.

He was sent down for 15 years for an unhealthy relationship with a mobster.

None of the pretenders to this week's throne had a judge of the high court describe their Mamparadom as "the greatest fall from grace in the history of South Africa".
