What I'm watching: Katarina Hedrén, film critic

06 August 2017 - 00:00 By Staff reporter

Katarina Hedrén is a freelance film critic and film programmer and director of the 2016 and 2017 edition of the European Film Festival in SA.
She tells us more about her TV-watching habits:
The first series I binge-watched was Deadwood. I'm grateful I watched Deadwood before The Wire since I probably wouldn't have watched it otherwise. After The Wire, I was convinced nothing could top it and that no other series would be worth the effort binge-watching requires.
I think there are similarities between the two shows. Deadwood tells of the early days of capitalism on steroids in the US. Dark, profound, funny with amazing swearing, it's compelling. The Wire also tells of rampant cynical capitalism and is perfection. The characters were portrayed with such complexity. I still think of Duquan and Bubbles; almost worrying about them and hoping life is treating them well...
