Netflix has liberated television in spectacular fashion

Netflix has given us binge-watching, true, but it has also revolutionised the kind of shows we can watch, writes Yolisa Mkele

Evolution is generally thought of as long periods of nothing-much-happening-here interspersed with dramatic advances.
We only notice the knuckle-dragging ape getting fed up with the state of his hands and walking upright - not the itsy-bitsy changes his body underwent before he could finally stand up straight like his mother wanted.
In this sense, linear, "tune in on Wednesday at 6pm" television is the knuckle-dragger to Netflix's bipedal swagger. Big evolutionary leaps, however, often draw attention away from more important incremental changes that make them possible.
While popularising binge-viewing may be the change that the streaming service is best known for, it is arguably not the most important.
