1. ADRIFT (2018)

After their boat is capsized during a catastrophic hurricane, a pair of young lovers (played by Sam Clafin and Shailene Woodley) find themselves adrift in the open ocean and find the courage to get back to shore. This film is loosely based on a true story.

2. 127 HOURS (2010)

James Franco stars in this harrowing tale about a climber trapped after his arm is pinned by a boulder in an isolated part of the Utah canyons. With no one to help or rescue him, he must find a way to make it out alive - alone.

3. ALIVE (1993)

How would you survive after your plane crashed in the Andes, with nothing to eat and no medical attention for 72 days? That's exactly what happened to a Uruguayan rugby team on its way to Chile for a match in 1972.

4. APOLLO 13 (1995)

Ron Howard's multi-award-winning drama starring Tom Hanks depicts the 1970 mission to the moon gone wrong. The film is about three astronauts who are part of America's attempted third moon landing, and the rescue mission that follows it.

5. THE WAY BACK (2010)

The perhaps-not-entirely-true tale of a Polish prisoner of war who first escaped the Soviet Gulag, and then walked 6400km (along with six other escapees) during World War 2. Whether the source material is true or not, the film was praised by critics.

6. UNBROKEN (2014)

Directed by Angelina Jolie and written by the Coen Brothers, this film tells the definitely true story of an American Olympian after his bomber crashes into the ocean. He must survive first being on a raft for 47 days and then being sent to prisoner of war camps.

7. EVEREST (2015)

Directed by the same man behind Adrift, this heartbreaking tale follows two expedition groups as they fight to survive the 1996 blizzard that killed eight people on Mount Everest.
