But when I was invited to a cooking course at the Discovery Vitality Healthy Food Studio I leapt at the chance since my fridge is always stocked with fresh ingredients (which we usually eat raw) and, unexpectedly, it was fun.

I knew far less than other participants, about applicances and implements at our well-equipped work stations and the basics like how to make stock but the chef Elisheva Williams and her sous chef Michael Knight were instructive.

They explained and demonstrated the steps of the more complicated recipes in an engaging way, then we had refreshments, rolled up our sleeves and got our hands dirty.

Each of us cooked three to four dishes out of about 10 recipes from the "winter seasonal delight" range including yellowtail kebabs with orange, ginger and honey, beef koftas with saffron yoghurt dipping sauce, a quiche and stewed winter fruit with quinoa crumble.

Despite the dishes being low in sugar, salt and fat they are tasty, though I found the fruit crumble better with Greek yoghurt (for breakfast).

At the end of the evening we sat down to a feast and, when we could eat no more, got to fill takeaway boxes. My son, 10, voted on each of the samples and my beef koftas scored highest with a seven.

I think the course good value since you’re learning culinary skills, getting a fine meal and leftovers (if there are any) and I intend to go back with friends.
