J’Something on why his kitchen rocks

J’Something, the lead singer of popular South African house band MiCasa, invites us over to chat about his home, and his latest partnership with Boardmans

Three words that describe your home: Warm, love and food.

How would you define your decor style, and what inspires it? My decor is definitely me. My whole kitchen has Smeg appliances, which all sit on top of black-and-white tiles. My lounge has personalised wallpaper that has Madiba’s profile on it. My bedroom has thick carpets with a forest look and feel. I like a relatively clean look, with modern appeal, yet with a touch of old-school elements. I like colour for certain areas in my home, but I like to keep it simple with black, white and grey in other areas.

Three home items that are on your wishlist: Damn, this is hard, as I have most things. I want to get a Big Green Egg, so I can start smoking foods. I would love to get a new leather couch. And lastly, I would love to get a big ottoman for my bedroom.

How do you relax and unwind at home? I cook. Cooking, for me, is therapeutic.

Your favourite room in your home? Hands-down, it’s my kitchen. It’s a place that I love to unwind in. I love looking at my Smeg appliances. I dreamt of one day owning these things, and now that I have worked really hard, I have them.

Best home advice you have ever received? Take your time in building it up. Piece by piece.

Tell us about your exciting partnership with Boardmans: Well, I am big on family, love and cooking… J Boardmans shares in this. I live in Boardmans now. You can walk into any store nationwide and see what I suggest in the stores, from my favourite appliances to the softer items like throws, pillows, linen, etc. Shoppers can also look out for some free recipe cards, which they can take home, compliments of J Boardmans.

Summer entertaining in my home involves… Great music and great food. I have a pizza oven that my friends always demand I use.

I can’t get through the holiday season without… Ginger, lemon and rooibos tea. I bet you didn’t see that one coming.
