LOCATION
This country retreat is in the foothills of the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal's Midlands Meander in Balgowan, a stone's throw away from Howick.
STYLE
The 30-year-old main house has the trappings of a traditional farmhouse, while the thatched cottages, added in 2014, are elegant but still keep to the rustic theme. Each has a private balcony overlooking the Lions River.
SERVICE
The hotel personnel pay attention to detail and make one feel at home.THE EATING
The Bistro and Eaves restaurants' menus provide for everyone - even vegans. It's good, simple food cooked with soul. Nothing beats a sumptuous breakfast buffet in the open countryside.
THE 'DO' LIST
Close by is the site where Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962. It's marked by a maze of gigantic spikes that form his face - an astonishing work of art.
There's also Piggly Wiggly, where you can buy anything from a needle to an elephant, and Belgian Chocolate, where the sweet-of-tooth are left begging for more.BEST TIME TO GO
All year round. It's lovely even when it rains.
FACILITIES
There are 32 luxury rooms, 12 deluxe suites and 20 garden cottages, ideal for families. All have satellite TV, fridges and queen beds. The main house has an underground wine cellar. The on-site spa offers a range of treatments.
RATES
The Winter Wonder special until September is R4,000 per person for two nights, with breakfast, a spa treatment, two bottles of wine and a chocolate and brandy tasting.
