Patricia de Lille's husband dies from long illness

Public works minister Patricia de Lille is mourning the death of her husband, Edwin, who succumbed to a long illness on Sunday evening.  

His death was confirmed by the family on Monday.

The pair were married for 49 years.

Paying tribute to her husband, De Lille described him as a loving father who supported her throughout her political career, giving her the freedom to fully pursue her work in serving the country.

“Our marriage was built on respect. Eddie was a true partner in the sense of the word and never stopped me from following my convictions. There was respect and support until his final days and I will miss him dearly.”    

The public works department on Monday commended De Lille for remaining committed to her work, despite her husband’s illness.

“The news has come as a great shock to all of us, who never saw minister De Lille's strength and commitment to her work waver during this time of her husband's illness. She continued to display the utmost diligence and professionalism in her work,” it said.

The department also relayed its condolences to De Lille and her family.

The ANC also sent its condolences after Edwin's death.

"Mr De Lille was a pillar of strength for Ms De Lille for many decades. This enabled Ms De Lille to serve her nation with dedication and commitment.

"The ANC extends its heartfelt condolences to minister Patricia de Lille, family, friends and all those whose lives he were touched. We hope the family finds solace in the knowledge that their loss is the nation’s loss. We wish them strength and fortitude during their moment of grief," said spokesman Pule Mabe.

Edwin leaves behind his wife and son, Alistair de Lille.
