Striking students at the Durban University of Technology in KwaZulu-Natal are demanding, among other things, free branded condoms on campus and the termination of a contract with the cafeteria's caterers.

A memorandum by the student representative council accused the caterers of assuming it was offering its services to "prisoners".

The students are also demanding an increase in book allowances, cleaning services to be improved and the security company to be fired.

They want wireless internet zones in residences, financial aid for BTech students and branded condoms to be made available.

On Thursday, management suspended all lectures on its Durban campuses after students threatened staff and disrupted lectures on the Steve Biko and ML Sultan campuses.

The students' strike began on Monday.

An internal staff statement issued by the university's corporate affairs director, Alan Khan, confirmed that management had received the list of grievances on Monday. He could not be reached for comment on Friday.

A statement by university management said the grievances "have been carefully considered". Regarding the branded condoms, it said : "The university complies with the government strategy on reducing HIV/Aids. In line with this, government-issued condoms are provided free of charge to students. Providing branded condoms to each student room is costly and unsustainable. "

It said the entire university would be a wireless zone by March 2012 and that issues about the catering company would be investigated.
