Pretoria's reputation as South Africa's centre for high-performance sports medicine received a boost last week with the launch of an advanced imaging machine capable of seeing sports injuries in the highest resolution possible.

The Philips 3.0 Tesla MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) unit installed at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Groenkloof is a first for the country.

The machine is equipped with an advanced digital broadband imaging technology, delivering crystal-clear images, rapid results and patient comfort.

It is the combination of advanced technology and ambient lighting making for a much-improved patient experience. Imaging technology is becoming increasingly important in diagnosing medical ailments, primarily due to the rapidly evolution of medical technology that has enabled doctors to produce lifelike images of internal organs and injuries quicker than before.

Dr Mark Velleman of the hospital said: "We foresee that current magnetic resonance imaging can be taken a step further with new and advanced applications with regard to neuro-spinal work, musculo-skeletal imaging and whole body imaging.

''The oncology community will also benefit through increased image clarity and through the capabilities that are now possible, as well as breast and prostate imaging."
