Sundays are for rich, satisfying meals, avoiding dishes and relaxing. Here are some of the best spots to enjoy a lazy, leisurely lunch in Durbs. Although this type of grub can be found in many venues across the city, there are a few standouts that really transform the day of resting into a day of feasting.

1. The Taphouse

Alternating between pork and lamb roasts, depending on the week, The Taphouse in Glenashley is a clear favourite amongst Durbanites. This is a Sunday roast with all the right trimmings: proper Yorkshire pudding, a thick and luscious gravy with a bit of applesauce, crispy roast potatoes and veg. At R79 it’s both incredibly affordable and satisfying. And, as the name suggests, the beer, both craft and regular brews, is on tap. Call 031-572-3674.

2. The Musketeers

Further inland, on Westville’s Essex Terrace, is The Musketeers at the German Club. As a testament to the nationality the club it’s at represents, Musketeers boasts one of the best Eisbeins around, you can indulge in that served with traditional sauerkraut, or in their robust Sunday lunch carvery, while soaking up some sunshine in the gardens area. Call 031-266-0836.

3. The Pot and Kettle

Up by Botha’s hill, it seems that the further away from the sea you go is directly proportionate to how big a lunch you can enjoy. Situated there is The Pot & Kettle, serving up both a magnificent meal and equally magnificent view overlooking the Valley of 1000 Hills. The Sunday Carvery menu includes a home-made soup, salads, potatoes, seasonable vegetables and two different meat roasts. Followed by dessert. Wear loose pants. Call 031-777-1312.

4. Gecko Culinary School

And if you want to do something a little different, the Gecko Culinary School in Musgrave is hosting themed Long Table Sunday Lunches every two months. Bring your own bottle of wine, or purchase drinks at the premises, grab a seat at the table and enjoy a multiple course gourmet lunch served by chef Jesse Felthuis and owner, Megan Harker. All guests are seated at one long table so you get to make new friends and get tipsy with current ones over plates of gastronomic delights. Call 031-209-4555.
