Inside ceramicist Clementina van der Walt's studio

"It is great to share views and ideas," says Clementina van der Walt of the airy space she shares with other creatives. She gives us a tour

I have been working in ceramics for 40 years. It is definitely something of an obsessive passion!
I grew up in Johannesburg, where there is an amazing light, a sort of an orange light. This drew me to bright colours and patterns, also inspired by African textiles and the urban and natural landscapes.
I moved to the Cape over 25 years ago, and the light here is different, softer, not so harsh, and hence my palette over the years has been toned down. However, I still love brighter colours and regularly put accents of this palette into my work.My studio is in an industrial building in Woodstock, Cape Town. It is north facing, and very light with fabulous views of the working harbour and the mountains. I am extremely lucky to have this large, airy space.
I share the studio with my life and business partner Albie Bailey, my studio assistants, Adonis Mumpango and Euloge Think, as well as several other creatives. It is great to share views and ideas, as well as coffee and lunch very often. My assistants are very skilled in making and painting the standard 'production' items. We work together as a team, using slip casting, press moulding, hand building and throwing techniques. We make mostly 'alternative' tableware with a pronounced handcrafted aesthetic.
We also make architectural tile panels and installations, and some sculpture.Experimenting with glazes is an ongoing process for me. I find it exciting and often unpredictable. In a way, the more I know, the less I feel I know. Glazing is as important a component as the form. Even though it may look easy, it is an extremely skilled process.I love the fact that people use daily the items I make and that their lives are enriched by them.
