LOCATION
In the Constantia amphitheatre of the Table Mountain range, below the Silvermine Nature Reserve, about 30 minutes from Cape Town.
STYLE
From historic to modern suites, this five-star boutique hotel has every style. Founded in 1682, Steenberg is the oldest farm in the Cape.
THE SERVICE
Flawless service is provided by staff who go out of their way to make guests feel at home.THE EATING
Steenberg has two outstanding restaurants. Bistro Sixteen82, adjoining the wine-tasting cellar with indoor and outdoor tables, has excellent tapas.
Catharina's Restaurant, overlooking the hotel lawns, is named after feisty Catharina Ras, who had five husbands and secured a title deed to the farm, making her the first official female landowner. It favours more traditional dishes. I had lamb rack and an irresistible dessert with frozen lemon curd.
THE 'DO' LIST
Wine tasting, golf and rock climbing are some attractions close to the hotel. I recommend saving the wine for last. We tasted five flagship wines in the morning and found it hard to haul ourselves up routes at nearby Silvermine crag.
Another delight is the Steenberg Spa.
For outdoor adventurers, options abound. Besides the mountain hikes and climbing near to Steenberg, Muizenberg beach is less than 10km away with surfing, kite surfing and sea kayaking.FACILITIES
The suites vary in size and grandeur from elegant standard rooms to splendid suites which can sleep families. There is also a pool and a garden with sculptures.
RATES
From R4,900 per room to R21,800 per two-bedroom suite until December 9. Peak season rates are higher.
