How often do you travel?
As often as I can. I try to do at least one international trip annually, but I travel locally fairly often for both work and leisure
Describe your first childhood holiday.
Road trips up the Garden Route and to PE was a routine trip for us every school holiday, since we have family there.
And your first trip abroad?
I was 12 and went to visit my aunt in the UK.
What is the most difficult, remote or adventurous place you've been?Kathmandu, Nepal, in 2012 probably felt the most difficult and remote, and it was adventurous because I was there by myself on my 23rd birthday. An old rickety taxi was the best mode of transport available.
I fell asleep in the cab and woke up to the sound of a goat inches close to my head. It had walked up to the taxi while we were stuck in traffic and stuck its head curiously into the window. Also, there were monkeys everywhere. I loved it all - the energy, the markets, the landscapes ... it was rough but it was wonderful.
What is the best way to travel once you are abroad?
Have a plan so you don't waste your money, but also don't plan too much or you won't leave room for adventure. Also, if you can get a local to show you around non-touristic places, it's always a million times better.What is your favourite city here or abroad?
Locally, Port Elizabeth. Internationally I have way too many favourites, including Rome, Lisbon, New York, Dubai and Tokyo.Do you prefer roughing it or luxury when travelling?
Luxury. On a recent stay in Dubai, my husband and I booked an amazing five-star hotel room but were upgraded to a super-king suite with incredible views.
What has been your worst travel experience?
I was stuck on an old shuttle boat between islands during a hectic storm in the Maldives, just before dark. The captain couldn't see land anywhere, the waves and rain were crazy. I really thought we were going to go down.
What's the oddest thing you've experienced while travelling?
I was absolutely fascinated by how Kathmandu airport had no computer systems - everyone just had to sign their name in a book upon entry. I don't know if it's still like that now.What is your best piece of travel advice?
Don't have too many expectations, go with an open mind and don't keep all your money on one card (I always lose my card).
What do you hate about travelling or holidays?
Flying economy. I'm tall and I can never sleep on the flight.
What elements - destination, people, attractions, etc - make your perfect holiday?
Easy access to halaal food, safe and efficient public transport that runs until late at night, beautiful and central accommodation, historical and scenic sites, a place to swim and a catch-up with a friend/family member who has moved to that city.
What's one place you really want to go?
Morocco.
