'The white folks are screaming about equality': Akon drags SA into Ye's 'white lives matter' debate

Musician Akon has dragged South Africa into the 'white lives matter' debate recently reignited by American rapper Ye. 

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, made headlines after wearing a “White Lives Matter” hoodie at a fashion show earlier this month. 

A stance Akon said would've made sense if it was shared in South Africa where, according to him, white people are suffering. 

In a recent interview with VladTV, the singer shared his thoughts about alleged inequalities in Mzansi.   

“Now that the power has been taken over, if you go into government its 90% blacks running it and the white folks are there screaming more about equality, saying things are not fair.”

Akon said there was a widening gap in SA society. 

“They are saying: 'things are not fair. If I go to get a job a black man would get hired before the white man. So the exact same thing that's happening in America is happening in South Africa

In a recent interview on the Drink Champs podcast, Kanye made snarky comments about SA-born comedian Trevor Noah’s ethnicity.

“The 78 media outlets that called me an abuser ... Trevor Noah [is] not even from America, he just looks black. I'm going to say: ‘Yo, Kim it’s going to get dangerous.’ So he's putting all that, 'He crazy [and] he's so OJ,” he said.
