Paramedics have confirmed that four suspects and a police officer were killed in a crash on the M1 south between Corlett Drive and Athol Oakland near Melrose, Johannesburg, on Monday.

Johannesburg emergency medical services said the police vehicle was transporting prisoners from court when it collided head-on with a Ford Ranger bakkie.

"[This was] after the driver of the bakkie allegedly lost control amid a road rage incident with a Mini Cooper travelling north on the M1,” said paramedics.

Multiple injuries were reported.

The M1 was closed to traffic as officials were clearing the scene.
